What patients say about sclerotherapy in Phoenix

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy for spider veins on my legs. After two sessions I'm wearing shorts again. Mild bruising that faded in a couple of weeks.

Sean M. · June 2026 · James Whitaker, DO

What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a proven, minimally invasive treatment for spider veins and small varicose veins. A solution injected into the vein irritates its lining so it closes and is gradually absorbed by the body, and blood reroutes through healthier veins.

It has been used for decades and remains the gold standard for small leg veins. Larger varicose veins may need an ultrasound evaluation first.

How the treatment works

With the legs cleansed, your provider uses a very fine needle to inject the solution into the target veins. A session takes 30 to 45 minutes, followed by compression stockings.

What Sclerotherapy can help with

  • Spider veins on the legs

  • Small varicose veins

  • Reticular (blue-green) veins

  • Cosmetic leg vein concerns

Before and after your appointment

  1. Avoid lotion on your legs the day of treatment.
  2. Walking is encouraged right after; skip intense exercise for a few days.
  3. Bruising and light brown discoloration fade over weeks.
  4. Wear compression stockings as instructed to improve results.

Treated veins are permanently closed, but new veins can develop over time, so some patients return for touch-ups.

Cosmetic spider vein treatment usually is not; symptomatic varicose veins sometimes are.

It is not performed during pregnancy or for patients with a history of certain clotting conditions. Your provider will review your history.
