I am Black and have melasma on my cheeks. I have been told peels are risky for my skin type.

Peels can absolutely be done on darker skin — the risk comes from the wrong depth, the wrong acid or aggressive treatment without preparation. I prepare the skin for several weeks first, use superficial peels in a series rather than one deep peel, and insist on strict sun protection, because melasma is driven by sun and heat. Ask any provider how many patients with your skin type they treat, and what their protocol is for pigmentation after treatment.

Melasma also tends to come back, so think of it as something managed rather than cured. A maintenance plan with topicals and sun protection matters as much as the peel itself.
